TRUST AND OBEY - Matthew 12:46-50

What Does it Say?  Jesus is told that His mother and brothers are waiting to talk to Him outside.  He points to His disciples and says that any who do God's will are His family.

What Does it Mean?  The passage today is not saying that it is ok to be disrespectful to our parents.  Jesus is using this opportunity to show the crowds that whoever does what God asks them are His family.  Jesus allowing His family to wait for Him also tells us that serving Jesus is to come first in our priorities.  Jesus family had the greatest opportunity to know about Jesus mission and His identity.  The passage does not say why Jesus family was waiting outside for Him; however Mark 3:21 says that Jesus family thought He was out of His mind.  The fact that they were waiting outside while He was preaching indicates that they were not supportive of what He was doing.  Often we take our opportunity for a relationship with Jesus for granted just because He is always available.  We allow other concerns to take Jesus place in our lives and think we don't have time to do our devos, attend Growth Group or church.  All of us have 24 hours in a day.  If we do not make our time with Jesus a priority, it will not happen.  Our relationship with Jesus should be our first priority ahead of our family or other commitments.  That is not saying we have excuse to neglect our family or other responsibilities, but we may need to look at other areas where time can be carved out to keep our time with Jesus a priority.  Time to get to know Jesus should take priority over serving Him.  Our time with Jesus is what strengthens our faith and will help us in the long run to serve Him more effectively.  It is easier to trust and obey when the person of our confidence has proven He is faithful.
