THE GAMES WE PLAY - Matthew 11:7-19
What Does it Say? v 17-19 Jesus says John fasted and they said he had a demon. Jesus came eating and drinking and they called him a glutton and a drunk. You can tell how wise someone is by what they do.
What Does it Mean? Jesus is speaking to the crowds and religious leaders. In vs 17 he is comparing them to children that get mad when the other kids don't want to play the game they have chosen. The religious leaders opposed both John and Jesus because they wouldn 't play the religious games they wanted. Do we get mad when others don't want to do things the way we think they should be done? They called John demon-possessed and Jesus of being a drunk and a glutton, so they could discredit the message as it didn't fit with their agenda. Do we look for excuses to ignore God's message by criticizing His messengers? The last thing Jesus says is that we prove how wise we are by what we do. It is wise to change our agenda if it does not line up with what God is doing. What is God doing in the world around you? Ask God to show you how you can co-operate with what He is doing.
