THE ENCOURAGER - Matthew 11:1-6

What Does it Say?  v3-6 John the Baptist is in jail.  He sends his disciples to Jesus to ask if he is the Messiah or was there someone else coming.  Jesus told John's disciples to go back and tell John of the miracles Jesus was performing.

What Does it Mean?  Have you ever been discouraged when you were criticized or punished for doing what you thought was right?  John was Jesus' cousin and had baptized Jesus.  He knew who Jesus was, but he was discouraged and second guessing himself.   Jesus answers his questions as gently as he can in v5-6.  He encouraged John not to give up.  John thought Jesus was going to baptize with fire and bring judgment, but He is healing the sick instead.  It is easy to get discouraged when things aren't going the way we thought they would.  Hebrews 12:3 tells us that Jesus knew what it was like to be discouraged and yet he stood firm; we can too.  Jesus was not harsh with John; He encouraged him.  He offered him a blessing if he didn’t give up or turn away.  John and his disciples prepared the way for Jesus and they needed to continue to follow Jesus in spite of what was happening.  If they rejected Jesus, all those that had followed them would also be led astray.  Jesus cares when we are discouraged and He will help if us if we ask Him.  He may direct someone to encourage us, help us see evidence of His perspective, or help us with our attitude.  Jesus cares and wants us to include him in our pain as well as in the good times.  If times are good for you right now, build the relationship with Jesus to carry you through the tough times.  Talk to Him today.
