Opportunities - Matthew 10:17-20
What Does it Say? v18-20 When you stand trial because you follow Jesus, you will have a chance to tell unbelievers about Him. Don't worry about what to say, God will give you the right words at the right time - the Holy Spirit will speak through you.
What Does it Mean? If we are a Christian, we are a disciple and our job is to tell the world about Jesus. Being on trial wouldn't have been fun for the disciples, but it was their chance to tell the court officials about Jesus. If we were on trial for our faith, would there be enough evidence to convict us? Jesus assures the disciples that God would tell them what to say. We have that same assurance. Fortunately we live in Canada and it's not a criminal offense to share our faith, but our mission is the same as that of the disciples. The instructions given to Jesus' 12 disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 apply to us too; we are to make disciples. How do we practically do that? We are responsible to build relationships with people who don't know Jesus and to pray for God to prepare their hearts, give us courage to speak, and the words to say. If we are praying, God will give us opportunities and help us recognize them. We won't say the same thing every time because people are at different stages in their spiritual journey. Some may only be ready to hear that you are a Christian, others may be OK with you praying for them, still others may be ready to hear what God has done for you and what He wants to do for them. We don't know where they're at, but God does and he will guide us in what to say. Remember what we learned yesterday about a balanced approach: be wise as serpents and as gentle as doves. A gentle dove shares the truth in love and would not judge or criticize them. Pray for three non-believers you have a relationship with and let God lead you as you make disciples.
